October 6, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Forum titled Poisonous Politics: Faith, Fear and Democracy
Impact of Islamophobia and racism in this election cycle and how we can challenge it
When: Thursday, October 6, 2016
Where: McKimmon Center, 1101 Gorman St, Raleigh NC
Join Triangle community members for a discussion about racism and the rise of Islamophobia in the United States and elsewhere.
Background:
This election cycle has seen unforeseen bigotry against Muslims and members of other marginalized groups. Islamophobia or anti-Muslim hate is manifested through interpersonal attacks as well as institutional forms of oppression. Members of MERI (Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia), Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Islamic Association of Raleigh, As-Salaam Islamic Center, Triangle Interfaith Alliance, Jewish Voice for Peace – Triangle and AIME (Abrahamic Initiative on the Middle East) have come together to challenge racism and Islamophobia. This coalition will organize a forum on Thursday, October 6th, to explore the rise in anti-Muslim bigotry during this election cycle, and identify steps to challenge Islamphobia and racism.
Speakers will include:
Shafeah M’Balia, member of Black Workers for Justice and Muslims for Social Justice.
Muhammad AbuTaleb, Imam at Islamic Association of Raleigh.
Gene Nichol, Boyd Tinsley Distinguished Professor of Law at UNC Chapel Hill.
Sponsored by local social justice and faith leaders. For more information, contact Rev. Nancy Petty, Pullen Memorial Baptist Church. 919-828-0897. npetty@pullen.org
