Islamophobia and Racism Talk at Fairmont UMC
On Monday February 29th-6:30-8:00 pm Fairmont United Methodist Church (UMC) will host a talk by Manzoor Cheema, cofounder of Muslims for Social Justice and the Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia (MERINC.org).
Islamophobia is a racialized system that oppresses immigrant and Black Muslim people locally and globally. Islamophobia results in Muslims and people perceived as Muslim experiencing discrimination, harassment, violence, profiling, and targeting by government agencies and individuals. Islamophobia exists to maintain and promote an unequal, violent global racial power structure.
MERI offers resources for understanding Islamophobia. These include books, movies and articles about roots of Islamophobia and how to confront this oppression. We also offer presentations and workshops on Islamophobia and racism. We offer these presentations and workshop to members of faith-based, peace and justice and educational organizations. Our goal is to build a broad-based movement against Islamophobia, racism and other forms of oppression.
MERI members and partners have been featured in local, national and international media. We believe that Islamophobia can only be abolished by taking part in actions that challenge forces of hate and oppression. Our members have participated in actions against Islamophobia and racism throughout North Carolina.
Join us to build a stronger movement to end all forms of discrimination.
